More on Exotic Cabling

Food for thought from one of our regulars...


From your description, it seems like some serious line filtering, low-pass filtering. A cable as big as you describe is probably a distributed LC filter. Maybe ferro-fluid and some dielectric (also fluid?) that is very lossy above 60 Hz. That would certainly attenuate conducted EMI.

These days, power quality monitors (with an eye on harmonic content) are more accessible. It would be interesting to log before and after harmonic content (and see if the cable has any effect on voltage stability, which I doubt).

Another (phase?) angle to this study is why the audio devices are sensitive to power line noise in the first place. Could the power supplies be improved? Obviously, it becomes a cost tradeoff: an external add-on vs a science project...
